pregnant lingcod

It may be a slow time of year for spearing but it is a busy time for lingcod. Peak of nesting. I was on a starfish survey in Puget Sound today and came across a 31" super-gravid ling. She'll lay eggs in the next day or two. Sorry its a crappy picture but I stay my distance and turn down the flash. Plus poor viz, etc.

Happy spawning season, everyone

Re: pregnant lingcod

Yep. That's why they close fishing season during spawning season for them in WA. Each time you take a nest-guarding male (the smaller dark ones with scuffs and scrapes on them there in the middle) predators consume the nest. So your by catch is about 10-25 lings per nesting male (.1% survival to maturity out of 25,000 eggs, which is a small nest). Nice big lethargic female just not my cup of tea versus giving them another 8 weeks.

Nice photo Ken, and way to respect the nesting lings.

Re: pregnant lingcod

I may become hugely unpopular in the state of OR, as I am thinking about taking up this fight. Thank you for another nudge in the right direction.
