Cleaning our beaches... Monthly beach cleanup proposal.
As Watermen, spearos and ocean lovers in common, I believe it is naturally our responsibility to take on the role of "Shepards" of the sea. As a kid growing up in Hawaii it was always instilled in me to respect the land and ocean and all of it's inhabitants, therefore it troubles me to see trash on our beaches and in our oceans.
We take and take from our waters but how often do we have the chance to give back? How often do you find yourself finishing a dive and having a weight belt full of plastic/trash that you've collected during your dive? So I got to thinking, how about a voluntary monthly beach cleanup? I'm aware that there are organizations out they're that already participate in annual cleanups but I'm not aware of any that are spearfishing related. I hope to hear some positive feedback and ideas on the subject. Keep an open mind...

Look up Shore divers Challenge on here. Mike - "wind in his hair" I believe started it. Not sure if its still going or not. Maybe something to look at.

Awesome. It also gives everyone's a chance to network and hopefully take a little heat off the spearfishing community. Good karma and hopefully ensures that we have clean beaches for our future watermen.

Exactly... BBQ or potluck. We can do random drawings for beaches from OC to south Ventura and everything in between.

E-mail this "writer" from the Oc register so she can redeem herself for publishing the articles about the dude breaking the lobster record every year.

Re: Cleaning our beaches... Monthly beach cleanup proposal.
Great idea. We used to do this for popular climbing sites. The climbing shop I worked at would sponsor it and set up a little booth at the site and for out water to everyone.
Also, every bag of trash that came back earned you a raffle ticket and at the end of the day some gear was raffled off and then we'd all go climbing. Awesome way to network and let the public know we're a solid community. |
