Re: Kayak options... what to buy?
Wilderness tarpon 160. I have a scupper too and the tarpon is more stable and faster than a scupper. It is heavier though.

Scupper pro all day erry day mang.
Bigger people complaining about scuppers being unstable are just unathletic as hell/terrible balance. Even when I was 240 I had zero problems with the scupper I used all the time. Absolutely fantastic dive platforms, so much storage, so easy to paddle. There is a reason damn near every competitive spearfisherman uses one for competition.

Pretty damn sure scupper pros are all the same length the only option you have is on how many hatches/tank well it has.

I prefer the 2 hatch boards. Seen so much stuff lost to the stupid tank well. Never seen a board system I believed in much to keep my gear stored and secured in the tank well. Someone will be along in a minute to tell you how the tank well is the bestest, most perfect way to go. Same guy will also tell you how a spectra line on a slip tip is the bestest, most perfect way to go. In mid April, he will post about his spectra being cut on the spine of a world class sized WSB, and he lost his fish, and tip. And then, on the way in, his mask and Go Pro were lost out of the tank well on his board. It's the Spearboard way, I tell ya....!!!!

Re: Kayak options... what to buy?
I've got an older WS Tarpon 140 I picked up on CL for relatively cheap. Great boat. Single large hatch up front, two tiny hatches and a large tank well in the stern.
Two of my buddies have Trident 13's. Really nice boats and that center hatch is pretty damn great for shoving fins and guns into. Jackson Kayaks makes some pretty great boats. They also have the long center hatch like the Tridents. When I bought mine I was looking for a yak in the 12-14ft range. Shorter than 12 and you are probably gonna hate paddling long distances. I didn't want to go much longer than 14 since I roof top mine and it can be a pain to get a big yak on top of a car/truck by yourself. Gear inside the yak is safest. I often have gear inside and in the well and have been lucky so far. I make sure everything not in the hull has been secured to the boat. Even if the ocean is perfectly flat I expect anything loose in the well to disappear. A well will come in handy if you plan on doing any tank diving from the yak. |

Re: Kayak options... what to buy?
Recently got a Malibu Trio 11 which I love. Nice and stable and all my gear fits in the alligator hatch. That said I will probably sell my 9' Element which is a bit small, but big enough to land the 50# wsb in my avatar and easy to put on your car (pm me if interested).

Yes At 75lbs for a 12.5' kayak, that thing is a tank. It's also 32" wide = slow pig. Stay 29" or under. There's a fu$%*ng wheel attached to the end of of it too. |

Re: Kayak options... what to buy?
If you can, try to demo a few models before pulling the trigger.
That way you can see what works best for you. I love paddling and trying all different kinds of kayaks and have had a ton of fun adventures on a bunch of different kinds. I'm kind of a kayak slut and just love em all. Whatever kayak gets you to and from your dive site safely, fits in your budget, and feels good to YOU is a good kayak in my opinion. Best of luck!! Sincerely, Jim ps..attached a few pics of a few different kinds of yaks that I have enjoyed paddling and diving off of.

Re: Kayak options... what to buy?
I dive an X-Factor and love it. My brother dives a Fish N Dive. Though I haven't tried too many kinds, the only thing I don't like about the X-Factor is it is kind of slow comparably to others. But talk about sturdy. I can stand up on it while fishing, and it's sturdy enough to take a between dive nap. I can store all of my dive gear and fishing gear inside the hull for beach entry. They're a little pricey but you can find good deals on used ones. I won mine in a fishing competition, so it replaced my Cobra Explorer.
