Re: Gulf Coast gun advice
I hear JBL's new triggers are top notch. Good guns
However, my suggestion would be Ocean Rhino RX4. I plan on upgrading from my Biller to Ocean Rhino next year. Don't go too long on length because our water can get pretty snotty. |

if you have the money, get a deathstick. it is a custom enclosed track gun.

Scuba or freedive. The JBL guns you mentioned are top notch indeed. The new euro is probably better if it's for freedive.

Re: Gulf Coast gun advice
As good as those deathsticks look theyre a tad outta my price range
my budget is roughly 300 ill mainly be freediving and i really like the open muzzle and magnet track of the euro so ill probably go with that unless there are any sub $300 guys out there that are better |

This question's been answered in a thousand different threads, with 10,000 different opinions..
Unless you're dead-set on a wood gun, check out the Mako spearguns.. Very versatile. And I have three wood guns (JBL 42- older trigger mech; Ocean Rhino 52; Biller 38). And it will fit well within your price range. If you're lucky, you may find one on craigslist since you're in Sarasota The major advantage of the Mako (to me), is how much easier the Mako tracks in the water compared to my wood guns, and it's the only one that has a reel on it.

This is video I shot from a few years ago (on a commercial trip). The kid shot a 70 lb AJ with a flopper shaft (a 120 mako) .. in the Gulf... think it was his first fish other than a sheepshead.. Yeah a single flopper will work.

so he just released the gun and had a separate rope tied to the gun that he used to bring the fish and gun up to the boat? |

There are other configurations, reels or having the spearshaft fall away from the gun and have a floatline or rope attached to the spear..freeing the gun.

Re: Gulf Coast gun advice
Buy a Mako I have two of them 70 cm and a 90 cm they are the best guns i have ever owned. They are very accurate. I killed a 44 inch cobia with the 70cm gun it was stoned dead. There prices are great and there customer serves is the best i have ever seen. I had bent my shaft on my 90 and snapped a shark fin off my 70 and with out even asking for a picture they replaced them. I will shoot Mako for the rest of my life. I would getting a 80 cm gun for Sarasota my 90 is a bit big for around here

Re: Gulf Coast gun advice
The only gun I've ever owned is a Mako.
That being said, I have never had any issues with it and I really like it. My buddy had an issue with his spear, but Mako replaced it for free. They also come with a 3 year Act-Of-God warranty(meaning, even if you break it while skydiving they will still replace it). I have a 100cm Predator Pro and I think that's a pretty good size unless the vis is really bad(less than 10-15ft). IMO, I would rather have a gun that I have to hip fire on days when the vis sucks, than a gun that I can't reach out and touch those skittish 10lb mangroves with on the days when the vis is good. |
