White margates stateside

Anyone else seen or shot big white margate recently out of Miami? Took this bigun in 115 on a wreck the other day , 2nd decent size one out of Miami . Was under the impression these things are all over in the Bahamas but don't see them around here on the regular at all . I thought it was a giant hogfish all whited out when I first saw it.

That's about an average size one here in the Keys. Actually pretty common.

We see a lot of them but we usually don't shoot them a lot because there is almost always something better on the reef here is my brother's personal best Margate.

I have shot them in excess of 8lbs in the West Indies. I don't eat them personally though, as their meat is quite tough.

Damn! That's a big grunt. On the west coast we catch these plenty while fishing for grouper/snapper. We keep the bigger ones as some days we end up with a pile of them and nothing else. They are tasty! IMO, better than snapper.
We don't get them near as big as that though.

Margates that size are fairly common in the Keys and all over the Bahamas. I've heard they are good eating but I just pass them up.
