Rob Allen float repair -tire tube

Here is a way to fix those leaking RA floats, just stuff a 15'' inner-tube inside them and pump it up till its firm. This probably has already been done but I thought I would share about it as it really saved me $$!

Nice! I've already gone through two RA bladders.

Those bladders are pretty pricey too!
I tried cutting up a bunch of foam chips and stuffing those into my float but it was too heavy, also tried the foam in a can, what a mess and still heavy!

Re: Rob Allen float repair -tire tube

Interesting..have you measured the pressure? What is the reading for fully inflated RA35L with the car tube?
I did the same trick with a 14" light truck camera and could only inflate to up to 4-5psi, although RA rating is 22psi (1.5atm)

Re: Rob Allen float repair -tire tube

I'm not sure, once it's inflated it's hard to get to the inflator bit. I have some guys coming out on my boat tomorrow that use tyre tubes in there ra floats as well, I'll see if they know?

Re: Rob Allen float repair -tire tube

I Checked how much psi I could get into my RA float and it was close to 10psi before I stopped. It seemed a bit scary to push it any further.

Re: Rob Allen float repair -tire tube

Not to derail a thread about RA floats, but would this approach work in the Riffe 2 ATM I have that has a flat?
Thanks

Re: Rob Allen float repair -tire tube

Im pretty sure the riffe is a bladerless and dont think the innertube will work. Dunk it in a tank of water find out where the leak is and just do a normal patch job if you can.

Re: Rob Allen float repair -tire tube

Riffe 2ATM does have a replaceable urethane bladder. I don't know whether it can be patched or not. I suppose the tire tube might work to a degree. But, seems it would be challenging to keep the inflater valve stem in reach as the tube inflates - and you probably could not achieve 25 psi.

Now, now, Woody. Some folks swear by those. And just because yours and mine turned out to be blems doesn't mean they're all bad. My warranty replacement seemed fine.
