Yeah it ain't cheap, Itwas around a hundred bucks for the one board, somewhere around $30 a board foot. That's cool you want to get started building guns early in life.good luck and post some pictures as you go if you can i'm just starting out as well, and there's some great people on this board will help you out if you just ask.

While a router table is really nice thing to have, you really don't need one to build a gun. You can do pretty much everything with a simple router and a mortising jig. Here is a nice tutorial on how to make a plunge router mortising jig.

Dont forget lots of sand paper! Also it would be a good idea to rip a few pieces and laminate them. The lamination process creates strength and will keep the wood from bending. If you have a Rockler store near you they carry great wood selection with straight grain. Good luck.

Re: Thinking of a gun build

I'm not sure if I should just do red oak for my first build. I know it's hard to keep straight but will it work? I'm trying to find an all mahagony or teak blank that is 72"x 3"x 2" for less than 120$ If anyone has one please let me know

Just look on EBay. You will find a nice pc. of Mahogany that will be just right. Make sure it has straight grain! Set the pc. up 100% and take it in the water, that will tell you where and how much lead you need for the pc. If I was you I would leave the red oak for above ground stuff.

From what I see..The bottom/darker pc. looks like it has the better grain of the two for your gun built laminates but you can't tell what is going on with that pc. at the top end from the picture and the angle. Some times by the time you get it and look at it up close you may have to cut some of it out and use that for something else in the gun, this may make a difference in your total lenght you are thinking. If and when the price is right you may even want to get several pcs. and use the best of those two rips for your laminates. Rips from two diffrent pcs. of wood may give you diffrent colors ones you get to the finish part when the wood grain and their colors comes into play. That's the fun part, even the same type of wood can give you a diffrent shade. It is all like a box of chocolate and "just as warm"

Best of luck to you

Re: Thinking of a gun build

So here's my new plan, I'm gunna make my first gun of a 3-4 laminate oak that'll only be 36" long and make a small gun as my first one, just so I can get the hang of things then go for a big cannon later

Re: Thinking of a gun build

As long as you keep it hanging on the wall and never get it wet it should be ok.
