Re: 77lb Yellowtail speared solo off a kayak
Kingfish in New Zealand behave much differently than our yellowtail here in California. Over in NZ the kingies as they call them are much less wary than our home yellowtail, which surprised me because the first yellowtail I encountered were in New Zealand, and the average was 50 pounds. As a matter of fact, the locals over there frown upon taking yellowtail less than 40 pounds as a matter of sportsmanship. We saw schools of 50 plus pounders all day long on the northern tip on New Zealand and they weren't the least bit afraid of us. At the legendary Three Kings Islands, the Yellowtail Kingfish can be found in the hundred pound mark if everything is in alignment.
