Re: California Dive Boats -- the legend of Radon (pictures)

Nathan, your restoration project looks great -- your engine room layout is beautiful!

As for your question about the video splitter for my two cameras, the multiplexing is done by the monitor. I bought the monitor from Fry's about 5 years ago. It's made by Directed Electronics. I just looked on their website, and I don't see any AV products listed so they might have discontinued the these. However, I'll bet there are others that make this type of monitor today.

It's great because it allows you to switch between 3 sources (camera-1, camera-2, and the built-in DVD player). You can play any of the 3 sources full-screen, or display picture-in-picture or split-screen on any 2 sources. Here's a close up of the split-screen mode while the boat is sitting on the trailer. You can see the cameras are almost perfectly aligned giving me nearly 180 degree view in front and about 60 degrees below:

Here's a full-screen shot of the DVD source:

I need to get some shots of what the monitor shows us when going through the kelp for you to really see the awesome view of the forward-facing cameras. It's like hunting seabass at high-speed -- without getting wet!

Re: California Dive Boats -- the legend of Radon (pictures)

Great meeting you guys on Caroline!

Your son is way too humble, I told him he was a legend, he kinda looked around like "who? Me?".

I'm glad my wife did not ask for autographs, she almost did lol.

The Caroline is even nicer in person... jeez.

What a bad time to launch. My old broken ugly boat and Lance's boat side by side. Not so bad if I was solo but having my wife and pops with me seeing your boat in person sucked. Now the heat is really on me to restore mine

Hope you guys slayed it.

I didn't get out. Verified fuel, spark, changed plugs, etc, still missing. Broke out compression tester and it looks like I have a stuck valve or dead lifter.
I'll be a grease monkey for awhile.

Later dudes.

Thanks Lance! I think most Radon owners would say, its a labor of love.

Thanks for the info on your video setup too, I will keep my eye out for something like that. I have a few ideas of how I can get viewports with cameras up front in the bow like you have. Maybe this winter that will be my new project.

Pretty sure 15. I know there's a 15 for sale on craigslist in SoCal right now. and i have a few buddies that own 16's for surfing the Ranch.

here's a real nice 16 that's been on CL for a little while now:

Here's a 15 Don Radon restored a while back:

Here's one of the coolest 16's around...this boat was completely transformed from a very used hull:

There are a few odd balls in the 15-18 foot range out there. They made quite a few 17 and 18 foot boats actually. Now a days the smallest mold they have is a 22', it is also the most affordable at a base price around $60k. I personally really like the 22'. Its a great little boat, especially when paired with nice outboard in the ~225 hp range. Fast, economical, handles weather like a champ, enough space to handle 3 guys plus gear easily, and its a Radon. I'd take one over a 26' anyday. My dream would be owning a 22' set up as a hardcore dive/fishing boat and a 29' with a little more luxury.

Yea, twin diesel, 500 gal aluminum fuel cell. 50 gal fresh hot water shower, hot/cold salt water wash down. 2000 watt geny, 1,500 watt inverter, 50mile Raymarine radar/c-80 screen. Twin 3,000# urchin flush fish holds. Ship to shore power, 4 vent hydronic heater.

Not as tricked out as lances boat, but she gets the job done!
I'm contemplating the camera set up. Cherry!

Re: California Dive Boats -- the legend of Radon (pictures)

I was going to say, that is a PIG calico... (even before I read the text)

Calicos always look small in pictures, even when they are 10 lbs +.

That is the first one I have seen, that actually 'looks like a Cabrilla'...

Rad pics.

Re: California Dive Boats -- the legend of Radon (pictures)

There's the public submitted records, and then there's the records that stay underground. I know of many diver's who have landed Calico over the present WR weight. The largest I know of is Billy grahams. Recipient of the BWM trophy in 76'( I think). landed a 14.5# 33" Calico at Rosa island-I'll try and dig up the pic. Frkn hog!

I often wonder how many prize weight fiish are taken without attention.
Anyone seen the 1958 b&w photo of the 140# mahi landed on line in Baja?

Deeperblue, sorry to hear about your engine trouble. It was great meeting you as well --and your wife and father! Your boat is awesome.

My son was only acting embarrassed about the autograph thing -- inside he thought it was pretty cool.

Glad to see your father still diving. Get that engine fixed so you can get him back in the water!
