Re: California Dive Boats -- the legend of Radon (pictures)

I wish I had an orgy board, mine only fits a solo board.

Re: California Dive Boats -- the legend of Radon (pictures)

I was lucky enough to bump into Don while they were splashing a boat they recently restored...the Fat Choi. This is an all foam boat built by Matt Chapin back in the day. It was used as a commercial fishing boat for quite a while until the new owners decided to restore her. They swapped out the diesel engine for 2 Honda OB's.

The layout of the boat was awesome. Tons of storage everywhere and the extended cabin sure made it super roomy up inside the pilothouse. A very cool and unique boat indeed. The owners have to be beyond stoked on how this thing came out because the guys at DR Radon did an excellent job on this beauty.

Re: California Dive Boats -- the legend of Radon (pictures)

I was wondering when you were going to post these pictures up.

What is the length on her, and why did they decide on the twin 150's over larger twins (saved weight on the foam construction)? I know those twin 250's really make the Pechuer fly, and I might have leaned toward a little more speed for those glassy days.

Haaaa sorry Nick...been busy busy.

Not sure on the overall length. I think the hull is 27ft, add the swimstep/OB bracket and OB's and it's probably pushing close to 30ft or maybe a bit more?

They went with the twin 150's for the exact reason you mentioned...weight. Because this hull is like a Greenough with the sponsons on each side (so less volume than a standard mono hull) Don thought the weight of larger OB's would put the stern too low, hence the lighter 150's.

The motors are brand new so they haven't gone through the break in period and the props are just the aluminum ones from Honda and they still got it up to 27 knots. I imagine once the motors are broke in and they can take it to WOT and they get the right stainless props it'll probably top out around 30 knots.

The one thing that really impressed me about this boat was the room inside the pilothouse. There's one captains chair at the helm, a bench across the back of the PH that could easily seat 3 grown men...then the rest is just open space (other than the v berth). Without a dinette, and a bunch of other things you'd expect in a cabin this size, the inside felt huge...I really dug it.

Re: California Dive Boats -- the legend of Radon (pictures)

I headed down to the harbor last week to grab a bite at Brophy's and ran into Don launching a newly restored old school 24 that was an ex-LEO boat from up north. I had a client from the east coast with me and Don asked if we wanted to go for a boat ride...shit yeah! Client was stoked b/c his driveway back east had 5 ft of snow on it and this was his first time to SB.

It's cool seeing these older boats brought back to life. I think this one was first splashed in the early 80's and now 30 years later it's getting another run. New motor, drive, etc. and it has these cameras mounted thru-hull style with monitors at the helm to see below. I really dig the teak handrails and swim step.

It was fun seeing this thing run after the resto and the owner was way stoked. Thought I'd share a few pics..

Some kind of mesh material, an alternative to tinting the windows I imagine.

SurfSeeker- Unfortunately I don't have any photos of it, but there's a Singapore built Radon center console located here in Morro Bay. I've talked to the owner a few times and it's an interesting story about how it ended up back over here. Maybe he'll see this thread and jump in with the story and some photos. Kind of amazing to me that the boat would go 'full circle' and end up returning to it's point of design origin.

That last boat in that sequence of pictures came up for sale about a year ago. looks like the boat went down, along with its price. Very sad, but things happen. I bet there is a pretty good story there...

SB-surfer- Here is a before picture of that boat...

There's quite a of these boats that have gone down and been brought back to life. I hope that white 24 gets back up and running...it's one sweet boat.

I'd say the guys over at the Radon yard did a kick ass job on this green one...night and day difference from what it looked like a short while ago.

^That Radon 24 that was restored is amazing. I saw Sam cruising through the SB harbor last Sunday. You can see that shade of green coming from a mile away. I think I would have kept those bow running lights though and put some green 5000 lumen LEDs up there. It would have looked sick cutting through the fog.

Canyon- Bwahahahahahahaha............yep, you know a thread is getting long when you can't remember what you've posted. Yeah, that green boat is the Singapore boat. My guess is some of that boat was fabricated here in the US, but the hull came from overseas, and that's the part the blows my mind.

Speaking of older Radon 24's that have brought back from the edge of the grave, here's a few photos of the 24 that one of the Gritzmacher brothers re-built at Anderson's. It really turned out to be a beautiful re-do, it looks just fantastic.

Sad news if you have not heard. I have launched my boats hundreds of times here in the last 40 years:
