Anyone use scanning sonar?

Hello, I recently got a used Lowrance HDS Gen3 that is capable of down scan and side scan if I get the transducer. Im mostly in the Marathon area and I am wondering if it is useful or just a waste to add the transducer.

I imagine it might be ablt to find some smaller coral heads that may not have been apparent along with t=giving you a good idea of the size of those tryes of features.

Anyone use a setup like this? Is it worth the trouble?

Re: Anyone use scanning sonar?

They work fine at slow speed max about 4 or 5 kts.they are not side scan. Side scan is towed close to the bottom. They are called side view. And much cheaper than side scan.
Side view works fine you watch the screen when you see a mark on screen you can mark it and use the gps to return to it to see whats biting or make a dive on it. I have a garman 7610 on my 20 ft wellcraft and found many new spots. It takes a little time to get use to it. I wouldn't have a boat without a side view garmin.
