Catalina trip Monday...what gun to take?
Hey guys, Im heading out to Catalina tomorrow morning off the express to Avalon and was really on the fence about what gun I should take. I'm torn between taking my Riffe euro 120x and my 90x, which both have reels. I will probably be shore diving west of frog rock and would like the versatility of my 90x, but prefer the range of my 120x...what to do?
I'm leaning towards my 90 so I can do a little reef hunting then maybe swap my shaft out and put my slip tip on for deeper water. I don't wanna be under powered just in case I run into any pelagics, but I don't wanna be stuck hunting kelp all day (boring) and get skunked. Any suggestions guys? Also, I am still unsure about the areas around Catalina. Like I said we'll be taking the express to Avalon in the morning and will probably have to do a bit of hiking or kayaking to reach our destination. I've dove Catalina before, but only off of a boat. So if any of you out there have suggestions on some spots that aren't too far, or the nearest spot to Avalon I would greatly appreciate it, Thank you! Last edited by Kapono; 06-22-2014 at 08:27 PM. I can't help except to give a conditions report.....
I was there from Thursday till today and water was blue, warm(70) and clear. I was on my boat with the kids and we didnt do any diving, just boating/beach I did hear some radio chatter before we left today regarding YT though..... good luck!

I'd take the 120 if you could only take 1

Well, I ended up taking the 120x and was glad I did. Beautiful vis and nice and calm.
Hit the east side near the rock quarry and saw some monster calicos and a couple yellowtail. |

I wish... just got a few good calicos. The yellow took off before I had a chance to take a shot.
