Catalina Feb 15-18th

Short version: No sign of WSB yet :-/ but great vis and tons of fun shooting fish and hunting bugs.

Long version:
Took off with the fam for to stay in Avalon last Friday thru Tuesday and had a pretty good time. Here's a break down:

Friday night: Arrived around 2:30pm and took Dave's Parker around the backside to see if we could find WSB. Dove for a couple hours with nothing in sight, we gave up and grabbed the smaller guns and jumped back in to grab some quick dinner since fish were everywhere. We ended up settling for one (10lb?) large, and two medium sized (3-5lb?) kelp bass. I had a 10lb sheephead shake off my 90 railgun when the flopper didn't engage, and missed another large kb at close range somehow :-/. (It's the first time in almost a year I've been disappointed with the sporasub).

Saturday morning: We waited around and took the whole family out for somewhere warm on the front side of the island. My daughter caught her first fish ever on her Dora the Explorer fishing pole:

Two and a half years old! She's making me proud already!

Dave managed to scrape together a couple bugs, one of decent size:

Even though the vis was easily 30+ ft fish seemed scarce - and with 10+ lbs of Calico back at the room to cook still, we weren't about to shoot anything but keepers.

Saturday night we enjoyed a feast of lobster and kelp bass:

Sunday we headed our early for another shot at WSB and got to our spot just to see commercial lobster boats pulling pots and running all over the beds. We spent an hour looking around - but everything was pretty dead. We decided to shoot over to hidden spot for halibut and Dave managed to pull up a this guy before we headed back for drinks and an afternoon in the sun with the girls:

The last night we had a ton of calico to cook still - so my MIL put together a recipe using left over flaming hot lays potato chips, italian bread crumbs, and parmesan cheese and made this amazing dish: (recipe coming soon)

Caught her first fish, AND got hooked on the good stuff, never been so proud:
"Do you want zucchini or onions Abby?" - "I JUST WANT LOBSTER!"

All in all it was a great weekend with family, friends, and a lot of fun diving. Even if we didn't see any WSB .

That was cool! Love to take my kid out anytime I can, We caught a little wsb with his little pole and I caught a 30" hali on it.

Good haul of bugs, hali and bass! Quality diving time and family time!
