Yes in Aus, but they did exactly what I was chasing without fuss and the cost per spear (bought 8 of them) was worth it.

I agree, the cost from them (Dean) was worth it. His shafts are also very straight. I tend to spin all my shafts on arrow spinners to test them.

The best carbon shaft I know are the Rob allen and Rabitech, but the best inox shaft are without doubt The Addiction Spears, UTH by Dean Koutras!!!!and they are custom made to fits the client needs!!

Spring steel shafts typically have a stainless flopper and pin. The protective coating will have long gone on the shaft from normal use before a stainless nose cone will have caused a problematic event.

Sigalsub shafts are great. Diveinn or scubastore.com has them for a good price. they sell the nose cones too.

Spring steel: These shafts are typically made in South Africa or Asia where environmental laws are lax. The rustproof coating used to cover these shafts is banned in most 1st world countries (in its liquid form) due to its toxic nature, but the shafts are legal to import once the coating is dry. These shafts are typically harder than stainless steel shafts by approximately 5-10 rockwell points. They rust very quickly if not maintained well and the floppers fail to deploy when they rust. They are generally not the straightest. Rob Allen leads the pack...

Stainless steel- Most spearfishing shaft manufacturers use 17-4 (Inox) type stainless steel since it is one of the few steels that can be hardened through a special heat treatment process.
It's a fact that most manufacturers don't get this process correct each and every time which results in shafts that are too soft (bend easily) or too brittle (they snap). Heat treating shafts properly is a VERY precise series of steps that must be strictly followed in order to get that magic Rockwell 44 hardness that is the sweet spot for spearfishing shafts. Further... many don't quench their shafts properly because they use chest style ovens or commercial ovens for their heat treatment.

As far as the quality of steel? All 17-4 Stainless is NOT created equal! Far from it! Many manufacturers use steel that contains impurities that result in shafts that bend/break easily or they are far from straight.
The only type of 17-4 that should be used for spearshafts is Certified, high quality, Centerless-ground 17-4 stainless steel.

Centerless grinding is a process that starts with a larger diameter rod that is ground down to the needed diameter. The result is a rod that is MUCH straighter than a normal rod and the surface stresses are removed.
This results in a shaft that shoots straighter and doesn't get the mini/micro bends/twists that come from hitting rocks/wrecks. In other words, it stays accurate longer until you get a major bend. So why doesn't everybody use centerless ground steel??
Because it's much more expensive.

The last major thing with shafts that varies considerably is how well sharkfins are welded on and if they are straightened properly after welding. Shark fins that have been spot welded WILL eventually break off. Saltwater gets trapped under the sharkfin unless completely encircled by the weld.
In addition, ALL stainless-steel warps after sharkfins are welded on. The best manufacturers straighten their shafts perfectly after this occurs while some manufacturers do it to varying degrees or not at all. The result of not fixing this warpage is shafts that shoot high on long shots or they are generally not quite as accurate.

IMO... The best shafts in the U.S.A are made by M85 Manufacturing (Formerly Spearcrafters) Distributed by Red Tide Spearfishing, Spear Gods and others. Addiction made really good shafts but I don't think Dean is making them anymore.
The Best shafts from Europe right now are probably Hunt although I've seen big differences in their quality over the years. There are a lot of shitshafts coming out of Europe right now so buyer beware.

Bottom line... Any shaft will kill a fish from 3 feet away. The best shafts are accurate at longer distances, and they stay accurate longer.
There is a good reason why some shafts are more expensive than others.

2 years ago I had some custom spears made in the US.
Stainless, diameter, length, flopper placement, shark fins etc... all to order.
Arrived in great shape, all still in great shape and I can't speak highly enough of them.
Unfortunately I've lost all the original paperwork and emails and can't recall their name.
They only did the square cut notch though, but as I was using these on neptonics mechs it was perfect.

I'm want to get in touch for some new guns, but can't find them.
If anyone can point me in the direction or recall the name (just throw them out there please), I'd be very appreciative.
