Actually the weight of your air is going to be the biggest factor. If you leave 500 psi in the tank your tank will gain about 4.5 pounds buoyancy during the dive. A steel 80 weighs less than an aluminum 80, is shorter, and is negatively buoyant after the dive. The aluminum 80 weighs more, is longer, and is buoyant after the dive.
Thus you can dive with a lighter tank AND take about 4.5 pounds off your weightbelt if you use steel. Most charters will only provide aluminum and many can't fully fill a steel tank.
The main takeaway though is that the air in your tank is going to be a much bigger factor in your buoyancy than salinity. Also, if you wear a thick wetsuit locally but a thin one on the trip you will have to dive with less weight. Be sure, either way, that you have enough weight to stay down for your safety stop at the end of the dive.
Edit: I am talking about high pressure steel 80 tanks.

Yes tank size and type of tank make a difference. I use my 100 steels and I use 4 lbs of weight with a 1.5mm suit. With a 80 aluminum I have to use more weight to get down. Although I’m not sure how much weight I will need this trip sense I lost almost 20 lbs. Guess I’ll find out in three week from now.

I had HP 120's but after taking up freediving could get 2 dives per tank, don't know why. So changed to HP 80 steel. If I ever run into a lot of money gonna surf/dive indo in that order, if they let me spearfish (freedive) that is. Never freedive after SCUBA tho, get U bent.
