That's what I was thinking at first, but it's reusable. To recharge it, you have to freeze it below 0 deg F. Then, a chemical reaction is primed that allows it to absorb heat.

They are supposed to be reusable for ~5 years, so $20 / 5 = $4 / year for one bag. Not too bad, especially for certain scenarios.

Everyone else. Thanks for the good ideas. I am always looking for ways to improve my diving and the quality of my catch. The 0 degree nu-ice and the salted ice sound like things I will try. Tony can you explain the process in a bit more detail?

Sorry Ross. Didn't mean to make you sad with my cutting words. The zero degree pack placed in a soft fish bag could literally freeze a medium size fish solid as a rock if left covered for the whole.trip. It is literally 20-30 degrees colder than ice (probably even I've with salt) so one pouch will be more than enough. Toss a small amount of loose Ice into the fish bag too and it won't melt but will chill your fish to the core.

It's cheaper over time
It's less cubic space.
It's less weight over all.
It's colder than ice
You learned about from an evil prick.

Again I'm sorry I offended you buddy. I just hoped you would do the research and find the reasons why I suggested before you responded with basic questions that are explained on the Nu - ice website.

But people looking for help always ask more than they research so I guess it's my fault for expecting more from the situation.

line the hold of my kayak with bubble wrap and add ice. You can cut it to slide up ino the nose nicely. You can buy it or if there is a kayak store near you they will have loads of it usually for free. It cleans up easily and when it doesnt, throw it away and use a fresh piece.
Fish bags etc are not generally an option since we are dealing with~5 foot Ono

I use salted ice. 10% salt by weight in old gatorade containers freezes around 0F. A couple of these in a cheap soft side cooler will give you nearly equivalent results to Nu-ice.

New name for Nu-Ice is "Cooler Shock" (coolershock.com). Buy the dry bags, add your own water when ready to use (saves money on shipping, easier to store). The day before you go fishing, put them in the freezer. Keep them in a cooler or insulated fish bag. Keep your fish on a stringer until you are ready to transport, open back or cooler, fish on bottom, Cooler Shock bags on top. Works like a charm.

I also keep a super lightweight cutting board and a cheap Ginzu knife to cut off heads and tails if fish are too big (I live down in Baja.... lot's of big fish here).
