Eyes on Carlsbad?

Anyone been out for a shore dive in North County? How's the vis?

Re: Eyes on Carlsbad?

Checked yesterday from grandview. Didnt look very promising. Might be different now that there are not as many clouds.

Where were you planning on going out?

Went out despite warnings... Couldn't see the tip of my 90.... I wouldn't recommend it...

Re: Eyes on Carlsbad?

Looking at table tops right now and it's flat and calm.
Looks like it could be clear. I'm surfing but will rely vis to the best
Of my ability with no mask.

Re: Eyes on Carlsbad?

Sorry for not responding last night after my dive. Went yesterday morning for a recon and surf, seeing how the vis was. looked okay with the offshore winds, took my mask out with me in the line up and lo and behold....the vis was pretty good (for lobstering)

Came back last night and scored these three bugs. No clickers, a few shorts in the same holes, went for the larger ones.

Went out in the same conditions (low -> high) 6-8ft vis, evening time and pulled out 5 shorts and 1 legal. no clickers, all were a mm or two short. They never left the water, get bigger little guys!

Apologies to the bad quality photos..camera on my phone. Did my best to clean them up a bit

I will most likely head out tomorrow evening (depends on if I am amped to get into a wet wetsuit) or Monday evening. How was everyone elses dives this early weekend? Similar conditions to what I was blessed with?

Re: Eyes on Carlsbad?

Hit up the SB kelp this afternoon with Peterislame. Conditions looked great from shore - glassy, calm, a few long boarders cruising on some slow waves - but upon entering the water we were greeted with 2-3 ft vis!! Arg! So we swam, and we swam, and we swam some more trying to outdo the bad vis. It was a cloudy 8 ft vis out in the kelp with not a fish in sight for a hour and a half or so. Just as I was thinking of calling it a good day for a swim, the vis opened up out of nowhere! Maybe it was because we had swam/dove our way halfway to catalina (but still in the kelp), but the vis miraculously opened up to top to bottom 30 ft!! It was insane! All of a sudden, we could see the whole underwater world from the surface, all the way down to the sea stars and garibaldi on the bottom!! We took our cue, dove hard one up one down, and took some large specimens of rubberlip, opaleye, calico bass, and sheephead. Got nice and familiar with seeing a resident soupfin and seal who circled looking for handouts during our 45 minute window of great vis and then just like that, ocean closed!! It went back to 10 ft green cloudiness so we happily made the swim back to shore to deal with our catch and call it a day...a good day. Thanks for being available last minute peter!!
