Re: Yellowtail Spearfishing Video *New*

Glad you guys like the video, even though it is not up to par these days. I guess the other 800+ views to this thread hated it

With the bubbles, no I wasn't blowing yellowtials heads off with a powerhead, they definitely came from inside the fish. You can't see in the poor resolution exactly what happened but when I shot the fish, I punctured the swim bladder and this shot air out extremely fast like popping a balloon. That fish didnt fight, I didnt "stone" him, but definetly hit it in a spot to take the fight out of it as I pulled it right up after shooting it.
I dont know how to explain this in physics, but the air shot out of the entry wound and up along the length of the shaft but did not travel up the shooting line.

I shot 4 yellowtail and 2 grouper this day witht the same gun, and the one on film is the only one that shot air out.

Re: Yellowtail Spearfishing Video *New*

The bubbles couldn't be from acceleration of the spear shaft and the subsequent agitation of the water by the fish; that would mean that the energy released from the spear and the fish was significantly higher than the energy used to boil water. Boiling water turns H2O into its gaseous state; it is quite incapable of separating the bonds between oxygen and hydrogen, and I'm pretty sure a heat source raised to the temperature necessary to boil water releases more energy than a spear. That said, there's also oxygen dissolved in water, and that doesn't take as much energy to release (I don't think), but I still doubt that the spear is enough to do so.

Re: Yellowtail Spearfishing Video *New*

That is not from the swim bladder because I have seen even bigger fish on my youtube quest lol release by far than half of that. At first I thought you were all crazy and that it was just the line had acted like a sponge does, trapping air inside only to have it squeezed out. But the air is released b4 the line is even extended. Pretty interesting..... I think Robdoggh's theory that the spear created enough friction heat between itself and the water to boil was correct. Freaking powerful gun lol

No its not water breaking down in to H2 & O2. Part of it could be popping the fish's swim bladder but the best explanation is cavitation of the water as the fish accelerates. This happens when the pressure in a liquid falls below its vapor pressure, creating gaseous bubbles. The trailing edge of the shaft as the yellow accelerates away would create this situation.

Check it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavitation

Great video by the way

I have to agree. The water boils (believe or not) due to the low pressure. Water, can boil at lower temperature when under lower pressure.

The same thing happens with your boat propeller.

Re: Yellowtail Spearfishing Video *New*

Thanks, RacerZF, but in my comment I actually stated that I thought the bubbles were from the swim bladder specifically because the fluid friction of the spear wasn't enough to boil seawater. I must have worded the paragraph strangely.

It would be kickass if there were a speargun that powerful. Shit, you could spear a fish and then immediately cook it from the inside out. Or something.

P.S. it's also possible than mjochinsen is right, and the water actually is boiling when it really shouldn't be, just because the pressure around the spear has been lowered by the swim bladder.
