All About Pole Spears & Slings What is it about that traditional method of the early hunter/gatherers under the water? These devices are indeed interesting and effective.

gloves for polespearing

would love your input on gloves used when pole spearing. I found the gloves I have now do not provide the traction needed to grip my spear. Ive been told to use grip tape as well, but id enjoy y'all input on the matter. Does anyone use special gloves when Pole spearing?

Re: gloves for polespearing

Probably not the best gloves for a spearpole but I use 3mm kevlar Aqua Lung Thermoclines and they do the job. I'm happy with them so far but I liked my old excels better. I spiraled some small diameter line around the shaft of my pole and then e-taped over to make my grip, works pretty well. I tried my buddies Crist with them a little while back and had some trouble with the grip.

I imagine you'd have more options in socal, I've seen some thin bug gloves that look pretty grippy.

I use hammerhead gloves and they have worked really well for me especially while using a polespear.

Cheap, low vis, kevlar with niltrile, pretty sticky (they make latex ones too). No warmth so not super useful in MA. Not really technical but cheap and decent. They wont dry quickly though.

I think these are essentially like the Salvimar gloves but 1/3 the price.

These look and sound like they would work for Lionfish, so I had to try them, too. Thanks for the info.

I get a much better grip with bare hands, better aim and less hand fatigue also.

They also make puncture resistant gloves that will stop a hypodermic. I cant attest to their flexibility or anything but I imagine they would let you handle a lionfish.

I've heard the dyneema are very good. I think that's what Hammerhead sells. You can also get them on Amazon. Liked the idea of the stainless in these others. May end up with both, in the end.

What tape do you guys use for grip? I have looked at the shrink wrapped grips but I'd like to keep the cost down for now.

I've been using thin cord spiral wrapped around the pole then wrapped with electrical tape and its done well.

I've also had decent luck with grip tape for skate boards, you should be able to get scraps of it from a boardshop.

my favorite gloves for all my spearfishing activities. Tough as nails and you have all the dexterity you need, especially for grabbing and holding a polespear. No protection from the cold but I use them all year long, only gloves I have ever found that can survive not only an entire bug season but also trips to baja. $10 and my hands are safe from bugs and gulfie gill rakers.
My hands feel cold for like 30mins in the winter then they go numb, works for me.

Love the cord and tape, already have those things on hand. That's what I'm going to do once I get my grip location figured out. Thanks!

Re: gloves for polespearing

Cord and self amalgamating tape is great performance wise but not super durable.
