Never used a battery powered caliper but I see how they could come handy. More so if your eyesight is no longer so great.

Will have to look into a pair of nice Mitutoyo for Christmas... :D

I don't think I fully understand what you are trying to say.

The OP has a few shafts liying arround and he wants to know what size are they. The length it is easy, as he just needs a tape measure....

I understand he is referring to speargun shafts.

For big round pieces such as pipes, a tape measure could be perfectly aceptable.

To verify the length, the tape measure is fine... To verify the diameter... get some calipers. You don't need a $200 Mitutoyo... for the task at hand, any El Cheapo brand will work just fine.
