Hi Spearq8
My name is Andy and I am from New Zealand
I have read some of your posts in regards to the Aballen spearguns and are wondering if you would mind sharing your thoughts on them.
In NZ we normally are shooting kingfish and snapper and use RA guns either 120 or 130cm and they are more than adequate for this. Each year I travel to Indo and spearfish and use a RA 140 or an Ulusub 145 rear handle, both guns have been ok for shooting doggies, spanish jobfish etc but do have a bit of felt recoil and muzzle whip.
After reading what info I can on the Aballen guns I am pretty keen on the Denton 130 and would appreciate your thoughts on the suitability of this gun from reef to bluewater spearing as you seem to have a good knowledge of these guns.
I have also asked greekdiver for his thoughts.
Thanks for any advice you may have
Cheers
Andy
The perfect cut length for Euro 120X is 62cm for short band and 66cm for longer band. This is using 16mm american rubber with small ID (or 5/8") and using a 50mm to 60mm wishbone. This setup is the limit for the 7.1mm Riffe shaft which is 160cm. More power than this and you will start getting shaft whip. This setup should not be used with the 6.75mm shaft or thinner shafts due to accuracy loss from shaft whip. You might get a little shot drift to the left (about 1 inch at 6 meters) but at the same distance you get about 8" flatter shot, or you cut the shaft drop by half. The penetrating power with this setup at 6 meters is equivalent to the default (as sold by Riffe) penetrating power at 4 meters. By penetrating power I mean how much the shaft penetrates a construction grade 7.5cm high density sytrofoam in pool testing.
I would like info. on band cutting and wishbone lengths for the Euro 120X. I have already used the gun a few times. Does this procedure need to be done on brand new stock 5/8 inch bands?
No , all you can do is set it for [like mine 15 ft or so. ] Make sure the bands are new and maybe 1" or so shorter than stock as that will keep it right on the money for 1-18 ft.Shaft drop is rapid after 18 ft, so dont use too long a spear shaft as every once of sttel now drops the shaft on the long shot.
