Figuring Out Shaft Size

I have a bunch of shafts laying around but I am not sure of the size. Is the best way to measure the diameter just to lay out a tape measurer and see how wide the diameter is?

Thank you!

To verify the length, the tape measure is fine... To verify the diameter... get some calipers. You don't need a $200 Mitutoyo... for the task at hand, any El Cheapo brand will work just fine.

I understand he is referring to speargun shafts.

For big round pieces such as pipes, a tape measure could be perfectly aceptable.

I don't think I fully understand what you are trying to say.

The OP has a few shafts liying arround and he wants to know what size are they. The length it is easy, as he just needs a tape measure. But for accurately measuring the diameter we have suggested the use of calipers.

He is not trying to figure out what shaft to use in which speargun... but to identify what he already has in stock.

Exactly, and the calipers were a great way to ensure accuracy. $6 and it came with an extra battery.

Thank you guys!

They give you an extra button cell as the one already installed may be used up as in a sense they are always “on” even if the digital display is “off”. They turn on with any motion of the jaws, you set the zero with the jaws closed up and then you are ready to go. Sitting in a drawer the installed batteries seem to last about a year even without using the callipers, but a lot depends on the quality of the battery as the ones supplied are not great. I only mention this as you may use the callipers infrequently and when they don't turn on you may think what a load of crap, but I have a number of them and they all do that, but you cannot argue with the price.

Never used a battery powered caliper but I see how they could come handy. More so if your eyesight is no longer so great.

Will have to look into a pair of nice Mitutoyo for Christmas...

I got the cheap one I recommended and so far, so good. It works for me.
