Re: Visiting the Hawaiian Islands?

I just got back from Andres custom handmade speargun shop in Bali. Got a 125,144,160
I'm in Kona from March 14th-19th. Message me if you want to dive and check these handmade guns out.
I shot a huge houndfish today while camping at Pinetrees.

Re: Visiting the Hawaiian Islands?

I'm likely to be heading to Hawaii from New Zealand next June or July for a family reunion, I jumped on the Hawaiian section of the forum and most of the questions I was going to ask were answered in this thread. Perfect!

I'm not sure what part of Hawaii I'll be going to but is it all pretty similar in terms of the reef structure and fish to be found?
Is June/July a good time to go there?
Can anyone point me in the right direction for a bit of hunting too?
There's a lot of charters listed at the start of this thread-who's the best to get their punters on to some blue water pelagics, or is it best to try hook up with some locals?

Re: Visiting the Hawaiian Islands?

Hey guys. I'm a Spearo from Santa Barbara heading to Waikiki for the weekend to referee the Honolulu Triathlon. Staying at a beachfront apt. on Honolulu and was hoping to jump in with my GoPro just for some video... no gun. Was curious if the diving was good. Would love to join some locals for a dive and just film them. Will share all footage, of course.

Yes, the reefs are very similar. The Big Island offers some of the biggest changes in depth closer to shore.
June/July is a good time, you will find better conditions on the northern shores during that time but you might find the south offering decent conditions as well.
As far as charters go, it really depends on which island you end up visiting. When you decide that, post up and we can offer advice on charter and areas to try.
I'm glad this thread has helped some people for their trips to paradise.

Aloha!
Chad

I believe the Waikiki Natatorium Shoreline FMA is opened this year (01 Jan 14-31 dec 14) and would be a good spot for you to jump in. I used to do that dive often and enjoyed it. You never know what you'll find on that dive.
Take a gun or pole spear and shoot some dinner.

Aloha!
Chad

Re: Visiting the Hawaiian Islands?

Thanks Chad! Unfortunately, I won't have the time or space to catch, clean and make dinner, but I do want to see the structure and different species you guys have. Thanks again for the info!
Cheers.

Re: Visiting the Hawaiian Islands?

In Maui July 26th - August 1st
Anyone suggest a good dive charter operation?
Is a snorkel trip to the Crater worth it?
Any suggestions for diving or snorkeling charters is appreciated!
Thanks Jim

Jim,
Check our post #1 on this thread, it has a ton of info on the islands, including charters for each island.
Aloha,
Chad

Thanks for posting this - 8 years later

Is this content still relevant?

Looking for some quality free-diving, I won't be spearing this time.
